Kids Come with No Standard Parts

Cars can be made with standardized parts. In many ways, it is whole lot easier to build a car than a kid. If you want a new car, you just buy, borrow or steal one whole (of course stealing is not recommended!)

If so inclined, you could go out and buy the millions of parts needed and put a car together yourself. But you can't do the same with people. There are no "People Parts" stores. There are no standard parts! Each of us is built anew from the ground up wit

h the most basic kind of matter: molecules.

All of us people start out as just a set of instructions. The magic instructions set within our DNA gather the building blocks of our bodies from the food we eat and put these molecules together in such a way as to produce each and every one of us!

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!!!

So... if you really were going to build a car, what type of parts would you want to use? Most people would want to use the very best parts they could get otherwise they would be spending a lot of time building a pile of junk.

Your body is the same. You need to use the VERY BEST ingredients to make a human body or else you will end up with a dilapidated pile of junk! (Now you know why they call food that is not nutritious "junk food.")

At first thought, this may sound easy enough to do, but it isn't.

We don't all know what food is best for us. "Junk food" is designed to be as tasty as can be. Some foods have hidden dangers such as chemicals and pesticides. Different people may react differently to different foods (as in food allergies.) Some people do not have easy access to healthy food. There are a lot more barriers to healthy eating than we would imagine.

These pages are designed to help us start thinking about the issues involves and start on the path to making healthier food choices.

 Plants Make Food

 We Are "of the Earth!"

We need to eat food to get energy and the nutrients we need  to build our bodies.

People can’t live long without food, so we spend a lot of time gathering and preparing our food.

But plants don't have to cook or hunt or shop for food. Plants make their own food from what is all round them...

 Plants eat
dirt and
sunshine!

Plants take "elements" from the soil and put them together in a way that makes them the building blocks for their bodies and for ours.

Plants turn the elements and air, water and sunshine into fruits, vegetables, roots, flowers, seeds, and other plant parts.

When we eat plants (or animals that eat plants)  our bodies change the building blocks into us!

The earth is made of elements.
Plants take up the elements and
arrange the elements to make plant parts.
We eat the plant parts and re-arrange the elements into people parts!

Eat 'em!!

If given a choice, most of us would most likely choose junk food, pizza, hamburgers, meat and chocolate inany form OVER ANY KIND OF VEGETABLE.

It is no wonder that our kids do the same.

But the fact is that kids will happily eat raw carrot sticks, snow peas, cucumbers slices, and avocado  and munch on lettuce, dip celery sticks into hummus, eat broccoli florets.

Everybody Eats

No matter who you are or where you live you need food to survive. A significant portion of our time, energy and resources are spent gathering, storing, preparing, presenting and eating the food that keeps us alive.
